The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

by Books to Barbells Book Club, October 04, 2020
Synopsis:

I vow to take thee as my date, to pretend to have and to hold, from rehearsal dinner to reception end, till Sunday do us part.

Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Morgan wouldn't normally do. She's definitely not the spontaneous type. But there's something about Drew Nichols that's too hard to resist.

Drew has never found it hard to meet woman - or to know just when to leave them. But now, on the eve of his ex's wedding festivities, he's minus a plus one...until a power outage strands him with the perfect candidate for a fake girlfriend.

From the best man's toast to the bouquet toss, Alexa and Drew have more fun than they ever though possible. But before they know it, Drew has to fly back to Los Angeles and his job as a pediatric surgeon , and Alexa heads home to Berkley, where she is the mayors chief of staff - and neither of them can stop thinking about the other.

They're just two high - powered professionals on a collision course toward the long distance dating disaster of the century - or closing the gap between what they think they need and what they truly want...

I am so proud of myself. I find myself picking up more and more rom-coms. I've always been a thriller girl, but ever since I read "Red, White and Royal Blue" (find that post HERE) I find myself wanting more and more feel good love stories. And this one is no different.

From the meet cute, to the early butterflies of a new relationship to the first fight, this book has it all and I'm living for it . Alexa and Drew's love story is not something you find everyday and that's why I love it so much.

MY RATING :
⭐⭐⭐⭐πŸ’« /  5

So, Alexa and Drew meet in the elevator malfunction. When does that happen? And you are stuck in there with a handsome doctor making adorable small talk? What can get better than that? I know!! asking you out on a date immediately after.

I loved how this book switched from Alexa to Drew's POV. I love knowing what each character is thinking and I feel like I get a better feel of what is going on. Getting into the minds of Alexa and Drew is something I really enjoyed. They were so different and that made it so great because you don't really expect them to work out, but they do.

After that first weekend when Alexa agrees to help him out because he is dateless to his ex-girlfriends wedding, they realize what a great time they have together and they have some steamy great sex. When they each go back to their own lives, they BOTH cant stop thinking about each other. Drew reaches out and they start hanging out with each other on a regular basis.

Having their relationship unfold was the best and funniest thing. What I really enjoyed is they could eat. I love it. Isnt that the best, though? New relationship, always eating out and getting to know each other then coming home to have some awesome sex. I found myself jealous of all the eating they were doing. They really were enjoying each others company and it seemed like nothing could go wrong.

One thing I do want to mention is how relatable I found Alexa to be. She laid out so many insecuriteues that I know for one that I have felt and I'm sure many girls have felt, like body insecurities and things like that. That really made me fall in love with  her and I just wanted everything to work out for her. The fact that she was a strong, spunky and career driven black woman made her and even more lovable heroine of the story.

In the end, I adored their strong connection and was so happy with how this story turned out after the falling out they had that I actually cried. Like, no joke. I let out some tears because I was so happy. This was such a great, feel good novel that I really enjoyed every minute that I spent reading it.

Now comes my favorite parts of my posts. The discussion questions! I felt like I was cheated last week because I couldn't find any questions. This week, I found the questions on PenguinRandomHouse which you can find HERE. Let's dig in. As always, I'm only going to answer just a few, not all.

1. Would you be able to choose your career over a possible long-term relationship, much like Alexa did?

πŸ’₯ I don't think I could choose a "possible"  relationship over my career. We have to be damn near married for me to choose the relationship. I am married now, but before I couldn't imagine choosing a relationship. I have always been more career minded than anything. But I think when you know, you know.

2. Was there a time when you were incredibly passionate about a project, weather at work or at home, and felt stymied about getting it through? What were you able to do to finish it ?

πŸ’₯ I run a retail store full time. When I first got promoted , I felt like I needed to work so much to turn the once badly ran store into a success. I eventually did do that and I did it within a years time frame, and here I am, 11 years later, still running a highly successful store. I worked extra, extra hard to get where I am and I lost many friends along the way, but in the end I am a very respected store manager and I like it that way.

3. Theo is Alexa's work husband- he's there for her, encourages her and is all-around her closet confidante at work. How important is it to have a work bestie? Do you have one?

πŸ’₯ I don't have a work husband, but I do have a work bestie, who is my right hand gal. I actually am lucky and have 2. They both support me in different ways and I couldn't imagine running my store without them. They both do so much for me and I am enterally grateful for both of them.

4.  Alexa and Drew bond over a mutual love of food. How important a role does food play in your own relationship?

πŸ’₯ I noticed early on that they loved food. Being in a big city like that , I'm jealous that they have so
many different options. I , unfortunately am from a small town, so my husband an I are kind of stuck going to the same places. Now, before I met my husband, I was the world's pickiest eater. My husband is not and LOVES food. I do enjoy going to different places and I tell him "I'll find something to eat!" My pickiness comes down t the fact that I don't like condiments or weird sauces. But in the end, its time spent with my husband that I truly enjoy so food always makes things better.

5. Communication is important in relationships. With all the different ways of communicating that technology now offers, have you ever had a text or email exchange that was misinterpreted and that led to conflict?

πŸ’₯ Many times!! Especially in a text message. It's hard to read someone's tone through a text message and that really played a factor with Drew and Alexa because they were in different cities and when they were having a bad day, since the other person wasn't physically around, its hard to read those signs through a text message. I've had many disagreements with my husband and friends over this when one person thinks that the other is being insensitive, when really, if the same message was said aloud, the tone would make the conversation be totally different.
